I have always been an avid reader.
I am one of those that never go anywhere without a book as you just never know if someone will keep you waiting (usually that person is me – keeping everyone else waiting!) or for whatever reason you get stuck in a place waiting for something or the other. I live in dread of not having anything to keep my mind occupied in some way. This has become even more of an issue at the moment as time to read since becoming a mother is very scarce and I would have to wake up earlier than everyone or go to sleep later in order to fit it in.
As part of my decision to become a businesswoman, I have decided that rather than reading fiction, I will now focus my reading time on self-improvement style books. I am almost ashamed to admit this as they generally tend to come with titles like [amazon_link id=”0091900212″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Think and Grow Rich[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id=”0749926287″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Secrets of a millionaire mind[/amazon_link],[amazon_link id=”0007195087″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ] Success Principles[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id=”0091907071″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Feel the fear and do it anyway[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id=”0768423732″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Kingdom Principles[/amazon_link]. Now I do not know about you, but generally no one around me is reading such books so there is an element of shame when I pull these out in public. I generally try to hide the cover of the book! In fact, just this evening while visiting with a friend, I decided that on the way home, I wanted to read a book on my laptop (Tloml was driving, do not worry!) so I asked if I could use their wireless connection to open up the book before starting the journey. At this point she asks me what I am reading. 😮 First of all, I imagine what saying the title out loud would sound like and decide swiftly against it so I try to change the topic. I think I have managed to distract her but no, she comes right back to the question and so I just vaguely say something about self-improvement and try again to dissuade her. This time I succeed!!! 😀
So what am I reading, you may ask? Well, the book I am reading at present is ‘[amazon_link id=”0091912652″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]How to get rich’[/amazon_link] by a guy called Felix Dennis. Just try to imagine saying the title out loud in public. There is a feeling that you may be succumbing to feelings of grandeur. And you can almost hear the thoughts of people as they wonder what makes you think you can actually do it. Of course, these thoughts may just be in my head but hey, I am only human and I have lived poor a long time. This is why I read books like this because I am beginning to notice that most of the people writing them started out just normal and then did something extraordinarily different from what the majority of people do. This resulted in them getting extraordinary results. I want extraordinary results so I read to inspire myself. After all if they can do it, why not me?
Anyway, I intend to try to fit in a book a week for at least the next year so I hope to tell you all what I am gleaning from the books I read. A challenge! I will definitely need to speed up my reading in order to do that. I am hoping that in a year, my thought processes will be different from the way they are now. Well, keep reading and tell me if any changes are noticed.
A quick ending note: You will notice links to Amazon on here (I am sure I solely keep them in business!!), this is just to help you get the book if you so desire. Yep, I get a little commission if you do buy it. Hope that is ok. 🙂
Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.
