Two days ago, one of my daughters got her exam results. They weren’t as high as she hoped, but they were MORE THAN enough to get her to the next stage of her life—so no wahala.
Still, it made me reflect. Over the past year, she has done so much, accomplished so much, stretched herself beyond limits. And yet, how easy it is to forget the victories and obsess over one perceived failure. I remember doing the same after my A-levels: I got an A and 2 Bs when I desperately wanted 3 As, and I cried as though my life was over. I even cried on a friend who had received a D! Looking back now, I can see how ridiculous that was.
But here’s the choice before her now, as it is for you and me every single day:
👉 She could define herself by one disappointing result.
👉 Or she could remember that she is someone who pushes boundaries, dares to live her true design, and chooses her zone of genius over the so-called “safe” path.
She has offers to study marketing & psychology at two very good universities which seem like safer options—but as is the norm for my daring child, she is choosing DANCE. She is choosing her purpose-aligned path. And because she dares so much, sometimes she stumbles. Sometimes, she fails. Sometimes, she makes mistakes.
And that is EXACTLY what happens when you dare to live fully.
It is not something to run from.
And so to the point I am making…
If you are someone with big ideas and the courage to pursue them, you will push on many, MANY doors. Some will be ill-advised. Some will be beyond you. Some beneath you. Some will be necessary stepping stones. Some you’ll push on out of fear, thinking they’re shortcuts, only to find yourself on a random journey to nowhere—bruised, broken and doubting yourself. Some doors will simply be distractions, things you do to make others happy and do what would be considered normal and wise things to do but you just will not be able to keep it going so inevitably, you will implode it in some fashion.
You will also be so focused on what you desire to create that you will make what others call “stupid mistakes” in everyday life—forgetting to clean the house, missing bills, burning the food—and loved ones will want to kill you while you blithely carry on building what only you can see. Sometimes, you will notice and feel lots of guilt but then carry on because the vision of all that could be is just too compelling and You KNOW that everyone will benefit if you just stay focused and get on with creating it.
Ultimately, you WILL MAKE MORE MISTAKES THAN THE REGULAR PERSON! Absolutely DEFINITELY!
And then you have a choice:
👉 You can tell yourself you’re stupid and not cut out for what you want.
👉 You can tell yourself the Divine is warning you off your dream.
👉 You can tell yourself you’re letting everyone down and you need to quit.
👉 Or you can listen to the “reasonable” people in your life who echo your worst fears, calling you deluded, foolish, and irresponsible.
OR…
You can recognise that you are on your way to your biggest dreams. That mistakes, errors, and failures are part of the process—not proof of unworthiness. You can lean into the Divine and allow yourself to be loved when you feel broken beyond repair and then you can pick yourself up and keep going because until you get where you are going, you will just not quit.
You can stop listening to the crazy voices rooted in trauma or the inherited “wisdom” from those who never dared for more. You can heal what needs healing. You can silence or cast out what tries to undermine your courage.
And you can CHOOSE, very deliberately, to keep your eyes fixed on your vision, refusing—absolutely REFUSING—to give up on yourself.
Let me tell you this: IT IS INEVITABLE that you will succeed. The only variable is time. And even that is partly in your control—the more focused you are on what you have decided to create and the less distracted you are by trying to keep everyone happy, the faster and easier it will be to reach your goal.
Again, it is INEVITABLE that mistakes will be made
It is ALSO inevitable that you will succeed if you don’t let those mistakes define you or drag you off-course because of some false story you attach to them.
Mistakes mean only this: you are learning, growing, expanding, and living a FULL AMAZING, ADVENTUROUS LIFE!
So please, do not compare yourself to those who have given up and now preach that “settling” is the respectable, grown-up thing to do.
Do not do this to yourself, for goodness sake.
I am telling you all this so that when you have those moments when you wonder why you are doing this when everyone else around you seems to be happy enough living their life and you start to wonder if you should just give up and settle for the ‘normal’ life…
STOP THAT NONSENSE!
You WILL make more mistakes than most.
And you WILL succeed more than most.
It is inevitable—if you do not quit.
So get back up. Brush yourself off. And let’s get on with it, shall we?
You are meant for more. And it is all available to the ones who have the courage to claim it.
WAKE UP AND LIVE.
