The Lie of Logic: How Smart People Stay Stuck

You pride yourself on being ‘realistic.’

You look down on those lost in the clouds of magical thinking…

You feel superior to their ‘baseless enthusiasm.’

You tell yourself you see things as they really are. You don’t shy away from the truth. You face facts.

And yet… you are unfulfilled. Unhappy. Stagnant.

You acknowledge that truth—but also believe there’s no other way to be. That this is just what life is, based on the ‘reality’ as you’ve defined it.

If you’re looking for a life partner, you tell yourself the reality is that most people are takers or playing games. You still try—half-heartedly, maybe—but underneath it all, you hold a quiet hopelessness. Still, if anyone asks, you’ll fight to the death to prove you’re “still out here looking”…

But you just need to be ‘realistic’ about your chances, right?

If you’re chasing a better job or climbing the career ladder, you’ve decided the reality is that people like you are always overlooked. No matter how hard you work. No matter the qualifications. The ones who succeed don’t look like you, talk like you, or come from where you come from. Maybe they’re white and you’re Black. Or the other way around. Maybe they’re posh and you’re not. Young and you’re older. Or vice versa.

And so, in your realism, you either push yourself to the bone trying to “beat the odds”… or you give up altogether. Because realistically, what’s the point?

If you want to change your body or improve your health, you cite your genetics. Diabetes runs in the family. Your culture struggles with obesity. “It’s inevitable,” you say. And so again—you either fight hard against this ‘realistic’ bias or you give in because… why bother resisting the inevitable?

You just need to be realistic.

You quote scientists. You point to averages. “People need x hours of sleep.” You don’t get that (or even seem to need it), so clearly, you’re just an insomniac. You don’t eat the “required” number of fruit and veg servings, so of course, you’ll get sick or gain weight. You are getting older so certainly, your metabolism must be slowing down, your eyesight worsening, your hearing diminishing, the pain in your joints increasing – it’s just what happens, right?

You say it again and again—”I’m just being realistic.”

And when it comes to business, the arts, spiritual work, anything outside the 9-to-5 “norm,” you assume it’s only for people with money, privilege, or insider connections. Not you. Not your kids either. So you nudge (or forcefully push) them toward something “realistic” with a safe career path.

Because again—“Let’s be realistic.”

And so it goes…

You think you’re being wise, responsible, grounded.

But in truth? You are punishing yourself. Sabotaging yourself. Shrinking yourself.

All under the disguise of “being realistic.”

You question none of it. You accept it all as gospel. When your life plays out in predictable, unfulfilling ways, you call it normal. If you’re religious, you might even say The Divine is teaching you hard lessons through this pain and struggle, preparing you for the next life where everything will be different…

You force yourself to settle. You tell yourself this is just how it is. Because…

You’re being “realistic.”

Ugh. Honestly?

What a waste of your sacred life.

There are SO many options available to you. But you refuse to see them. You genuinely believe there are none. Even when they are right in front of your face.

You pray for Divine help—but when the help comes wrapped in something unfamiliar or not “realistic,” you ignore it. Dismiss it. Wait for a miracle instead.

Wake. The heck. Up.

Just because you’ve always believed something doesn’t mean it’s the only truth.

You are only paying attention to what confirms your bias. You project your fears onto the world and then pretend they’re facts. You ignore all the signs and possibilities that don’t match your narrative.

You act like the story you’ve told yourself is the only story that can ever be told.

And yes, I know it’s hard to choose hope over despair (though you call it “realism”). Especially when everyone around you believes the same. Or when “wishy-washy dreamers” make you double down on being practical and grounded.

But it’s not impossible to open your eyes to more.

And right now, I’m speaking directly to you—Ambitious Spiritual Person.

You claim to believe in more than meets the eye. But when it comes to applying faith to your actual life? You decide it only applies in theory… or in the afterlife. You tell yourself the promises aren’t for now because the world’s a mess and what’s the point?

You are checking out of life—and dressing it up with spiritual language.

And it doesn’t even feel good. (Though you’ve convinced yourself that feeling good is superficial.)

Again—WAKE. UP.

There is a better way. And you sense it. Or else you’d have stopped reading by now.

I’m not here to convince you of anything. I’m here to plant a seed.

A crack in the wall you’ve built.

Let that seed grow.

Let that crack widen.
