Setting Goals the SMART Way – 5 Tips

By October 28, 2013November 6th, 2014Business, Self Development

Many people just go running right out into the world, spinning their wheels as fast as possible, hoping that something will stick.  Setting goals is a foreign concept, created by the ‘stick in the muds’ or so they think.

I know because I have been known to do this.  I used to belong to the fire, fire, fire parade with no concern about whether I was hitting the target at all.  Sometimes, it is the only way to get out of bed and make something happen but really, it is a rather over-excited way to start your own business.

Setting Goals SMARTIn time, I learnt to take a breath and slow down somewhat.

Sometimes, you get caught up in the feeling that unless you get it all done yesterday, someone will beat you to the punch and all opportunity will be lost.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Building a business is a steady, long term proposition so take the time required for discovering your primary aim and purpose and also for setting goals so the work you do is the most productive.

Some tips on setting Goals

  1. Do it the SMART way

Is there anyone left on the planet that is unaware of the SMART methodology?  Just in case there is, let me explain.

    S stands for SPECIFIC
    M stands for MEASURABLE
    A stands for ACHIEVABLE
    R stands for REALISTIC
    T stands for TIME BASED

So, an example when setting goals would be – By Friday, I will have spoken to three jobseekers about my job opportunity of property manager.

Now, that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time based.

Your Turn – Take a second to write down a SMART goal right now.

  2. Write it Down

If you are struggling with the step above, why not first start by writing freely about what you want in some detail and then from that, pick out the simple one or two sentence goals that will get you what you want.

I am a huge lover of writing things down as it stores them more accurately in your mind and heart.  So write them down in detail.

  3. Rewrite your goals daily

For the same reason as above – It helps your mind and heart hold on to the goals.  Thereby making you aware of any opportunity to fulfil them as you go through the day.

  4. Read your goals out loud

Definitely read your goals out loud two or three times a day.  This keeps them fresh.  While reading them out with enthusiasm, close your eyes and visualise what your life will look like when you reach these goals.

I still remember having my princesses staring at me like I was crazy as I stood in one corner of my room at the same time day and night to recite my goals.  Interesting times!

  5. Write them on cards and carry them around with you

This will keep your goals right in front of you all day.  Look at them often, remind yourself of them often.  Change the goals as you reach the old ones and keep your goal document fresh and relevant to your every day life.
