Let me be clear, if you have not started a business at all because you claim you have no money, then this is not for you.
Because the simple truth is, that if you really wanted to get going, you would already be going…
You are simply looking for excuses and maybe, you are not cut out for entrepreneurship, stick with the job.
Yep, I am being judgemental!
And unapologetic!
Because honey, this entrepreneurship journey is not for the wimpy and anyway, you are gone already so I am gonna stop talking to you…
Now, for those who began but feel stifled for lack of money, I almost feel like this is irrelevant because you already know this, don’t you?
You already know you are going to have to get pretty creative, right?
You already know that you are going to have work harder at getting attention because you don’t have the advertising dollars that some other people may have.
You know that, right?
And yet, I know that you may start to wonder if your idea is valid, if you have what it takes, if there is just something wrong with every part of your business that it is not flush with cash already…
And you may start to look at funding sources with longing, thinking that you should go get their money now to relieve some of the pressure on you…
But if you simply do that, you take away the learning that you will have by figuring out what works organically.
I have done that…
Learnt to live on credit and pretend the money would never run out…
But then at some point it does and you got used to having money to mess with and so now, you lost your edge and you have to get it back.
You have to get pretty darned creative to stay in the game…
Juggling this and juggling that…
Trying not to get too desperate but failing at times…
Keeping your eyes on the goal and your big ‘why’ and trying not to be mercenary…
LEARNING NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED.
Working harder than you have ever worked before and realising that you had so much more capacity in you.
Feeling powerful and more able than ever before!
OK, let’s go back to the ‘learning not to take anything for granted’ bit because there is one area where I see entrepreneurs getting all entitled and thinking that just because they built it, everyone would simply come find them…
And I did it too…
In fact, until recently I did not see how much I took this for granted…
I mean, social media.
Are you taking social media for granted?
Are you expecting it to deliver all your clients, customers, recruits to you just because you are there on the platform?
Well, stop it already!
Get proactive…
Catch any sign that you are believing that it is your right to demand that people see your stuff for free.
It is not and that attitude stops you doing what you can do.
And what you can do is actively follow/friend people so that more people get the opportunity to be exposed to your stuff…
Leave your ego at the door and go follow some peeps, LOTS of peeps!
Be in groups and get active, VERY ACTIVE!
Do not assume that the platform will distribute your stuff for you…
DISTRIBUTE IT YOURSELF!
Something else you can do is pitch yourself to lots of places offline and online.
Get in front of more people any old how you can.
Face down your fears.
I know you want people to validate your idea by just somehow finding your stuff and coming to you, BEGGING to work with you…
And I also know that the gurus who have been around for the last 10 years with their own audience already built are telling you that you should just get busy creating content but you already know it is not enough anymore, right?
Your bank account is telling you!
So, get off your awesome arse, stop looking at the dwindling money and allowing it to stifle the creativity that got you started in the first place…
And GO BIG!
Be everywhere, doing something!
EVERYWHERE!
Do not give into the nonsense that the norms tell themselves of getting burnt out…
Even if you do burn out for working this hard, you can take a break and come on back…
The faster you do this, the faster you will build an audience who then goes over all that stuff you sweat blood and tears to create in the past – Thankfully nothing will be wasted.
Now you have a foundation of content for people to consume, get to know you fast and choose to work with you so much quicker than those who were too lazy to create anything and telling themselves that they need to check for quality, not quantity (HOW SILLY! It is a bug bear of mine! How the heck are you going to know what quality is while you sitting there on the fence! For fuck’s sake, create something, anything – let the marketplace decide for itself while you carry on creating in volume – Anyway, that is an aside!)
So, yes, create, create, CREATE!
But then capture people’s attention by getting it EVERYWHERE!
YOU have to be the one to distribute it.
They will not simply come find you and no platform is simply going to hand you customers…
They are in business TOO!
And honey, it is a blessing that someone took the time to build a platform that could potentially link you with the world, if you choose to use it.
OK, so go on, get creative…
Ask yourself what you could do next to get more eyeballs on your stuff.
Get to doing it.
NOW!
Fight for, deliberately design the life you are born to live.
Because you want to.
