Meeting New People – the Basis of Business Growth

Do you think it is possible to build a successful business while hiding behind your computer? Well yes and No, it all depends on what you are doing behind that computer.  There was a time I wanted to remain hidden so I sat on the internet planning and thinking and researching and all that type of stuff that people get up to when they are too scared to face the world.

Do you suffer from the lone wolf syndrome? You tell yourself that you are researching things and so you avoid making contact with the people you need to speak to in order to get the results you so desperately want. It is time to pick up all your courage and become visible, both offline and online.

Over the last few years, social networking has become a force of nature. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Reddit and a whole lot more are where lots of people dwell.  Now, some of the old fogeys amongst you may not like this so much. You think all the young ‘uns should switch off all the technology and start talking to each other again. And I say, “Get Over It!

This is the world we all live in now and it does not have to be good or bad, it just is, OK? Get with the program 🙂 !

You need to focus on all the great things about social media.

Wow, right now, I can connect to people all over the world thanks to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for Facebook. Imagine the business opportunities in that! Suddenly, everyone has access to a global business. From the comfort of your home, you could do business with people almost anywhere on the planet. How amazing is that?  Open your eyes to the potential for your business, for your friendships.  People have married partners from the internet.  It is incredible.

I have relatives who live abroad and I can use facilities like Whats App, Skype and recently I heard of Viber.  So much choice and FREE! – apart from the bandwidth cost.  Again, think of the possibilities!

Meeting People Offline

Just because people can meet online all the time, does not mean you can afford to ignore the people you can touch right around you.

What are the options for you and your business here? Soo many!  For years, business people have formed networking groups in order to build their circle of prospects and build their referrals as well.  Who knows who you might meet that knows the next lifetime customer of yours?  Think about it.

It is not about selling everyone the moment you meet them; It is about ensuring real people know you as a real person with a real business that does_________ (fill in the gap).  This then enables that person to tell someone else about you and you just never know, increased business may be on the way.

Think Rotary Club, Networking events (find one or set one up!), seminars, workshops, business conferences.  So much choice to get out there and make new contacts.

Work on your influencing skills and ability to build rapport with people quickly and you will have no trouble building business this way.  For some, this is the only way they will work with you. Be available!  Don’t limit yourself just to the internet.

High Touch and High Tech – Always think like that.  Where possible when starting with a new client, I want to meet them so they know who I am, really understand that I am completely FOR them and their success and some things translate better in person.
