It’s hard to leave behind a religious past — the ties on your soul run deep
Logically, you can see the flaws in what you once believed. But mentally and emotionally, fear lingers — especially if you were raised to believe in the devil, hellfire, and a wrathful deity who could both fiercely love and/or punish without scruples.
You may have been raised with these ideas from birth, or perhaps you reached for them in a moment of weakness when you longed for help from Source. Organised religion seemed the safest path — they sounded so certain, and their rituals gave you structure, calming your mind and making you feel taken care of.
But over time, what once felt safe began to feel like a cage. Leaving meant risking eternal fire and punishment — and, perhaps just as painful, losing your community and friends.
You don’t believe it anymore… and yet, part of you still does.
So when life goes wrong, part of you still wonders if those harsh teachings were right — if you are being punished.
The problem with thinking that is that you subtly and unconsciously stop seeing what you could do to correct whatever issue is going on in your life. If you think, even a little, that God is the reason why you are suffering then a part of you thinks you have no choice but to bear it and so you do. You feel helpless and victimised and caged.
And because you are the authority in your life, your body listens. Cells and organs respond to your inner narrative. Autoimmune issues may flare, or exhaustion may weigh you down.
At this point, many return to religion fervently, trying to make up for all the time they left, trying to pay their dues to a deity who is angry at them. They become even more judgemental of their ‘backslidden’ existence and judge everyone who does not believe as they do. It is a wonder to behold…kinda. It feels like if they just shout loud enough then their punishing deity will forgive them for straying, if they attack all other ideas vehemently then their own sins will be forgiven. They are like Saul (from the Bible) before he became Paul, killing all the christians to prove his ‘loyalty’ to his god.
For those who resist, the temptation to return still lingers. Especially when life feels hard, the appeal of letting someone else do the thinking is strong.
I get it.
I was it.
I can sometimes still be it. (Except I go to the Divine and so far, I trust what I hear from them)
As I say, these religious ties go soooo deep and I had been religious since birth.
So I understand that fear — the gnawing doubt, the wondering if you’ve got it all wrong and if hell is still waiting after all…
And it is also why I teach so vehemently that you must learn to go directly to the Divine, even when you feel so uncertain of yourself, so unsure, so tempted to give up your independence to any sure-sounding dogma that will take care of you and take away your need to think.
It is scary out here in the wild.
It is scary to be a pioneer.
And yet, if you will stay open to the Divine, keep allowing yourself to be loved even when your religious roots tell you that you are not worthy of love, keep the lines of communication open to the Divine and trust what you KNEW to be true when you were feeling high-vibe, then old habitual ways of thinking will begin to fall away and you can continue the journey as the Practical Mystic you know you are meant to be – Someone who thoroughly enjoys the physical reality while continuing to expand their awareness of the unseen realm too.
I do not, in any way, suggest that you do this journey alone because one of the reasons your head gets so crazy at times is because you are trying to sort everything out within your own mind and getting quite confused, isolated and crazy about it. You also hate asking for help and that is a bit of a problem because you do not know what you do not know and sometimes, you cannot even hear what the Divine is trying to say to you because you keep running everything through the filter of your old perceptions of the Divine. However, be very wary of getting support from someone who has an unconscious leaning towards getting you back into the fold of their religion, no matter how certain and sure they seem. Your freedom was hard won – Do not sell it for a little false certainty!
As I said, I see you and some days, I am you. I can help.
The parts of you that try to drag you back into what you once escaped can be powerful. They can even turn your body against you if deep inside you believe you deserve punishment.
These parts must be faced boldly and untangled fearlessly. That’s where I come in.
I can help you discern what’s dogma and what’s truly the Divine.
I can help you hold onto freedom while expanding your life.
I can help you deepen intimacy with the Divine, while awakening to your own power as someone who is ONE WITH THE DIVINE.
