For so long, I was stifled.

My natural tendency is towards leadership but I was female.
.
And so, within religion, I was to be silenced.
.
It started in Africa. It continued here in the UK.
.
It was not all bad, of course and I even found ways to get my own way but I really should not have had to manipulate or cajole in order to do that.
.
It left me feeling somehow guilty and angry and resentful.
.
And also, I felt like God must be a very hateful creature if he would create me with certain gifts and then tell me that I could not use them simply because of my sex.
.
And so, I craved the Divine but also, distrusted the Divine because I was told that all this stifling was a result of the Divine’s wishes.
.
Now, I TOTALLY KNOW IT WAS NOT but at the time, I was sure that my desires and ‘pride’ for thinking I could have them, would get me sent to hell for all eternity.
.
I have seen other people hurt in even worse ways within the confines of religious settings.
.
From being denied the right to live out their calling for all kinds of spurious reasons all under the heading ‘God told me to tell you that’.
.
To being shunned from the supposedly loving community of believers for the slightest infarctions because ‘God’ calls you sinner.
.
To money being taken forcefully because God needs it.
.
To horrid sexual and physical abuse because GOD appointed them as leader and gave them free reign to do any old thing to any one.
.
Again, I don’t want to say all religious activity is bad. That would not be truth.
.
I have simply seen too many hurt by other people in the name of ‘God’.
.
I have supported many clients in leaving very abusive religious situations.
.
And the scary thing can be when the abused does not even realise they are being abused. They feel bad but they think it is somehow their fault because well, neither God nor his leaders, can do any wrong!
.
And then I see many spiritual peeps who are unable to truly and totally prosper because we need this connection with the Divine in order to be able to create the prosperous life we desire.
.
We need to trust the guidance we receive.
.
We need to trust that we are loved, safe and fully supported.
.
But how do you do that when the very power you need to lean on, has been used to abuse you?
.
You need to understand that God/Higher power/Universe/whatever you call it, did not hurt you, PEOPLE did.
.
Wounded people wounded you.
.
They may have thought they were doing the best by you but it was not the best and now you think it was the Divine that wounded you.
.
And you may hear me say that it is the people, not the Divine, but you still find yourself thinking that God could have prevented it.
.
You forget that we have free will.
.
And a lot of us are adults when we put ourselves under this tyrannical rule – WE CHOOSE IT!
.
Maybe passively or because we do not know any better but we still chose it out of fear.
.
Yes, things can happen and have happened to children who should have been protected but that is a story for a different day and is still the result of free will, unfortunately.
.
This is what I know – YOU CAN HEAL.
.
You can heal so that you prosper.
