Getting Investment when Starting a Business

By December 5, 2013June 14th, 2021Business, Entrepreneur

Do you just assume you need investment when starting a business?  Is that the thing that holds you back from making a start?  I have found that a lot of people on the Facebook Page do consider this a limiting factor?

Srating a Business Getting Investment

The truth is, I do not believe every start up business requires outside investment to get off the ground.  Unfortunately, while you think you need it before starting a business, you are relegated to only dreaming about your ideas instead of making things happen.

Another truth is that outside investors will want to see what you have done, what experience you have, how creative you are and how much YOU believe in your idea before they will put their hard earned finance into your business.

So, to start with, it may be best to think outside the box in order to see how you can start with only what you have to hand.  Maybe instead of finance, you should be looking for people to assist you with their knowledge, their hands-on help, if you are a parent, then you may need child care assistance at times when starting a business.  So even without cash, there may be other things people around you can help you with.  And those services will certainly start you on your way.

Open your eyes to the possibilities around you first without such a beeline focus on needing money to get going.  Focus on the goal, not how you get there.

You are Expanding or Starting a Business but Still Need Investment To Go BIG

Now, once you have got things off the ground on a small scale and now you are trying to take it to the next level and you know for definite, you need outside investment then following this method may help you.

An investor ultimately wants you to show that if he/she gives you X amount, then you will return X amount plus more in a certain amount of time.  It needs to be believable and you need to be seen as a good investment.

I unfortunately have people sending me requests for money who cannot show me any of the above and most times, I do not respond, because I really do not like when people expect to get everything for nothing!

So step by step,

  • Tell them about the business

What does it do?  How do you make money?  How is it different from other similar businesses?

  • Tell them about you and your team

What experience do you bring to the table?  Or the people you are working with? Anyone with a track record in this area of business? If early on in the business journey, you may not be able to show this and that is OK but be enthusiastic and not just a dreamer.  Let them see the passion you have and even if you do not get money, you may well get people who offer their experience to get you expanding quicker than you ever could on your own.

  • Tell them about how much finance is required

What will it be used for? Possibly best not to mention it is your salary 🙂
How will it be returned? When will it be returned?
Is anyone else going to be funding as well?

Here is an example document that I used to raise finance for a property deal.
