What Are You Going To Do With What You Know? Three ways to get your message out

What are you going to do with what you know?

military-orchid-893569Let me point something out to you firstly as we begin this conversation…

You know things that other people don’t know.

You have been exposed to things that other people have not been exposed to.

You have information inside of you as a result of your experiences and possibly education that others do not have access to.

And it is not by chance that you have that.

It is not a fluke or some kind of coincidence that you know what you know.

So… what are you going to do with that knowledge, that experience, that message?

Is it going to go to the grave with you or are you going to figure out how to get it out of you in a way that impacts the life of other people in the world?  Are you going to let your fears about being weird and somehow unacceptable, win?  Are you going to hide your light under a bushel because you cannot quite figure out how your knowledge, skills, experience can make a difference to anyone?

YES? Fine then.  Carry on living your dissatisfied , half baked life!

NO?  Cool, keep on reading!

As I already said, there is no fluke or happenstance about what you know but you have to choose to put it out in the world deliberately and invite people to have their life impacted by what you know and do.  It is not enough to know it, you must share it.

Surely, you are evolved enough to know that your information is not for you alone, it is for the world so don’t be a dam.  Let it flow.

And I get it…  It is hard to figure out how exactly to let it flow because sometimes what you know seems too woo-woo for the world at large or how you want to present it seems weird and you wonder if people will take you serious so you spend all your time trying to make it palatable to the masses instead of realising that your true fans – the people you are really called to serve – are waiting for someone like you to speak up in all your weird glory so that they can assuage their thirst for the result only you can get them.

Stop dithering about it, please.

In a world of seven billion people, do you think that you can find your people?

The problem can arise because you want to create a lot of wealth from your thing and so you are trying to figure out how to make it palatable to those who will pay you. And yet, there is also a part of you that wants to help everyone for free.  It is a weird blend of issues and it holds you back.

There are simply three things you must do when you have a message this big.  All three are like the chicken and the egg – There really is no ‘do this first then that’.  You must do them simultaneously.

1. Build An Audience

Whatever stage you are in your journey, build an audience of people who have some interest in what you are about and what you do.  The chances are, you already have the makings of an audience.  You already are in touch with people who think that what you know is useful and you do not yet see the power in that.

Today, get deliberate about building your audience.

  1. Set up a Facebook Page for the sake of simplicity and invite people to be a part of your community.
  2. Set up a group on LinkedIn or Facebook and again, invite people into it
  3. Build your own mailing list so you have access to it regardless of any weird algorithm changes that you have no control over.

2. Share Your Message

In order to keep on building an audience of people who are interested in your information and experience, you have to tell them what you are about.  This is where people get trapped in the ‘over thinking’ phase as they wonder how to position themselves.  Don’t be that person.

Ask yourself a few key questions

  1. What is my message?  What am I choosing to put out into the world?
  2. How does it change lives? What result will they get from working with me?
  3. What kind of people will be attracted to me?  What result do they think they are looking for?

And then go where your people are hanging out and speak to them based around the result they are looking for.  As I put this point together, I was reminded of how Jesus started sharing his message – He went to the synagogue where his people (the ones who needed what he had) were gathered and read to them from their holy book and then declared that he had the solution they were looking for and to come follow him.

Simple.  Possibly nerve-wracking but simple and that is where he began his career (interesting word to use but could not think of one that did not smack of Christianese!)

But in doing that, those who were thirsty for what he had, followed him and availed themselves of everything he gave them.

Those who were just a little curious came along too and some converted to true followers in time and with more exposure to him and his message. Others walked away.

And a final group came because they were angry that he dared to claim he could impact people and they felt the need to come tell him off and show him off as a fraud.  Yes, the chances are you will have this group of people as well.  These will stick around just to tell you off and insult everything you do.  And if you are not careful, you will massage your message to suit this crowd instead of seeing that they are not your people and they are just there to prop themselves up by making you feel small.

Keep the clarity of your message by daily tapping into why you do what you do and reminding yourself of who you are called to serve.

And also, don’t wait for perfect clarity – That too is a recipe for going to the grave with your message still in you.  Start with what you know today.  Tomorrow, by further exposure to your true fans and more time spend uncovering who you choose to be, you will be a little clearer and you can then share your message even more clearly.

You share your message in speaking engagements, webinars, blog posts, article writing, books, advertorials, workshops, social media updates, conferences, radio interviews, podcast interviews.  Chose to make every marketing piece something that enhances the life of another.

3. Serve Them

The third and final thing that you must do is offer your people a way to work closer with you and avail themselves of your skill and experience.  As you share your message with your ever-growing audience, you must tell them exactly what to do if they want to work more closely with you and get the results you promise.

Create programs that will support them and offer them in exchange for a show of commitment to change – Yes, this will be money!

How can they work with you on an even closer basis?  If it is your experience and skill then can they work with you one-on-one or in groups.

Can your experience and skill be translated into an actual physical product that will help them get results?  Show them how to access that product.

Understand that for your work to carry on and impact more lives, there must be an increase in financial wealth so you can do more – Stop being apologetic about it – It is reality.

Stop diminishing what you do by refusing to call people to a bigger place of commitment.  That is the only way that they get real results.  They must commit their time and money in working with you.  Going back to the Jesus analogy, his disciples had to give up their occupations from the looks of things which cost money and showed commitment.  And though Jesus had no permanent place to live, he lived with someone.  He seemed to be entertained in lots of places – All that cost someone money.

And if you are someone who has no problem with recognising that you must be paid for what you do, don’t get sooo caught up in the strategy for asking for the sale and then you lose touch with why you do what you do in the first place.  You do it to change lives so start changing lives from the get-go.

Share freely your knowledge and experience but if people want more, then ask them to invest in it.

OK, it is time to get on with it.

Stop over thinking and please stop living a life where you disconnect your wealth creation form your service.  It is okay for both to exist in the same place.  Face your own crazy beliefs about wealth creation so that you can get on with serving the world with what you know.

I could go on and on but I want to keep it simple.

  1. Build An Audience
  2. Share your message
  3. Serve them

You keep it that simple too.
