Yesterday, my princesses were occupying themselves by playing with fire!  Now bearing in mind that they are home educated, I love them to have new experiences but I am not sure about the play with fire so I had to call a halt on that particular experiment quickly.

Now, to play with fire when you are young is pretty exciting so I know why they were interested.  And you know what, deep down they knew I would come and put a halt to it before it got too dangerous.

What happens when a business owner chooses to play with fire with their prices?  Let’s see…

Pricing your products, services wrong is a bit like playing with fire.  The problem, of course, is that no one is going to come and rescue you.

You will just be left to your own devices to learn all about it the hard way.

  1. You have a few clients/customers who take advantage of you

  2. You have innumerable complaints from people who are getting practically everything for free and yet, expect sooo much for their almost non-existent money.

  3. You are run ragged trying to keep this business going and the numbers show that you are practically subsidising the whole operation

  4. Before too long, you get fed up of it, you start to resent the people you originally wanted to serve and …

  5. You may decide to give it up – After all, how long can you pretend to be in business before you decide it would be easier to be in a job or doing nothing?

The hidden thing you must realise is that the prices you sell your stuff at does not just affect your bottomline, it also affects how much freedom you actually create in your life, it affects how much time you can give your family as you must work harder for less reward.

The other thing is that if you are competing mostly on price, then how low can you go?  Because it is only a matter of time before someone else comes in cheaper than you and all those customers you struggled to find walk away to the next likely contender.  No loyalty, no nothing.
