Whether your business is offline or online, you can have an online marketing strategy. The thing I find with most business owners and entrepreneurs, and the truth is I too fell into this category for so very long, is that there is no strategy in place. There is just what seems great to do today and then when it does not work, then they go off with the next shiny idea.
There is no continuity of marketing, there is just spray, hope, pray. And as I said, I too used to do this and I am ashamed to say that I have to continually pull myself up for this tie and time again.
Because of the work that I do, I want to ensure my knowledge is always up to date for a range of businesses so I take a lot of training. It is inevitable that while hearing what others are doing, I get enamoured with another great idea and then another and then I try to change what I am doing to suit this new great idea and ultimately, always come back to what works.
Do you know what works for you yet?
Or are you still jumping from place to place when it comes to your marketing strategy.
Anyway, right now, let’s think of your online marketing strategy and the things you must consider and implement.
1. It is always people you are dealing with
It gets easy to forget that just because you are communicating computer to computer or computer to smartphone, you forget that it is still people you are dealing with. If you would not do something in the flesh, then why are you doing it on the computer.
If you would not walk into a room and start to sell, sell, sell, then why do you think you can walk into a forum or Facebook group and do that? Needless to say, people will feel spammed! So start by realizing that wherever you meet people, they are all people with needs, wants, desires. Always let your marketing lead with what is in it for them.
When popping over to established audiences, answer questions, be useful, be a resource and then you will find that more people will consider you an expert and then they will want to do business with you.
I start with this because most entrepreneurs think they can throw together an advert or two and make lots of money but it never works that way. Unless the person you are dealing with has an urgent pressing need then you may find that you spend a lot of your budget and get very little results. There is no foundation in place.
You cannot advertise like the big boys do and get the same results because you are still building credibility so do not expect your adverts to work as well as theirs do. Commit to being a resource of information and then converting that interest into customers. Yes, you can advertise while you do this but understand that you do have to build your foundation if you are really intending to be in business for the long haul.
I mean, even if you are in network marketing, take a look at the heavy hitters in yoru industry and see that a lot fo them have books out, they do talks to help others, they are now seen as an expert because they have taken the time to support others.
Remember, online or offline, the more people you serve, the more money you make. Keep that adage at the front of your mind when building your online marketing strategy.
2. Determine who your people are
You have probably heard all about the ideal customer thing and I certainly have written enough about it 😀 but I want to add something to the mix here. Too many people get stuck on this point and keep jumping from one person to another. I say to you, to just pick someone and possibly let it be someone that looks and sounds like you unless of course you are female and selling something to a male audience or vice versa.
Do not allow this point to be your sticking point in business. Just pick a group of people or an avatar that seems close enough to the kind of person who will use your product, service or opportunity.
And in all your marketing, picture that person sitting next to you and speak to them. Whether you are updating Facebook or writing out an email to them, see that avatar in your mind’s eye and also seek to refine it more and more by asking questions on social media and your email list – Ask them what they want, what they like, why they are in your world and use those answers to further refine the person you are speaking to.
3. Talking of email lists…
Do you have one?
I am never sure why some entrepreneurs don’t build this useful tool for a growing business. OK, I kinda do know – It is usually something to do with not knowing how or not understanding why it is necessary. Enough of that nonsense, it is a key part of your business to build up a contact list whether it is offline or online because too many people will not be ready to buy from you yet. However, as you build credibility with them over a little time, they will start to know, like, trust you and hopefull buy from you.
When thinking of an online marketing strategy, it becomes even more necessary to have one because there are so many websites, Facebook pages and so on, if you do not capture the information of people who put their hand up, you may never ever see them again. OK, you may reason that there are 7 billion people on the planet so if you miss one of them, so what?
It all depends on whether you want your whole life to always be about finding new customers! A very tiring way to build a business. Why not instead of going straight for the sale, go for the sale upon sale upon sale?
Building an email list is a definite key part of your business.

4. The Free Giveaway
Create a free giveaway that again builds you up as expert in the mind of your prospect. This is how you get people onto your mailing list. Worst case scenario, without all the technical craziness, you can just ask people to send you an email if they want your free gift and you manage your list manually. It may not be the most efficient way of doing it but it gets you started. And you can add on all the other stuff later.
Create a free giveaway as an ethical bribe to get people to agree to join your list. I would suggest you create a whole lot more than one in fact. Think through all of your ideal customer’s desires, pains, challenges and come up with quick informative and helpful solutions for them and offer, offer, offer it every where. Of course, the only way they get access to it is if they send you that email or pop over to your landing page if you have one. You take those email addresses and names and you start to communicate with them regularly.
5. And that brings me to my final point
Communicate regularly. I hinted at that in point 1 but get very strategic about this. There is no point getting people’s contact details if you then forget to do anything with them.
Put it in your calendar to write a newsletter each week or maybe send them an informative, educational, entertaining or inspirational email twice a week or more.
The best way to do this is to put together a few of these newsletters ahead of time. Write 5 weeks worth and then just add one to your list each week. This way, you are always ahead of yourself and you never feel too pressured because you have run out of things to say.
Write a daily blog – That can be part of your newsletter. Make sure there is always some kind of call-to-action in it. Feed their mind and then ask them to take a look at what you have for them. That way, you never feel like a crazy sales person, instead you know that you are the trusted entrepreneur who always wants to serve more people in the world.
And that is the truth, isn’t it?
