I started my blog in 2010 just as a record of some of the stuff I was doing to build my property business. I really did want it to be a place that people could come to and see that regular old me, was making things happen and so, therefore, they would hopefully realise that they too can do it. It was also a place to be held accountable. I announced to the world that I was going to be successful in business and well, I was going to have to be.
And I was.
However, the blog was kinda okay.
I lost interest at times and got distracted by actually doing the work of building the business. I thought it would be easier than it was. I thought I would start to write and then, the whole world would find me out in two seconds flat…
Yeah… it did not happen.
There was me and about a few million other blogs out there and increasing every day. I was just one of the masses.
And that might be how you feel as well – You kinda want to keep a blog but it is hard to stay motivated when no one is coming over to your blog. Even your friends have stopped reading it. and you are starting to feel a little ashamed that you cannot seem to make it work.
Here are a few ideas for you…
1. Who is your blog for?
I know this may have been a heart-project for you as you tried to get your message out to the world. And yes, I understand that it is a message for everyone. And yet, again, if you ty to target everyone, you actually reach NO ONE.
So, who are you writing for?
Create a customer avatar and keep them in mind everytime you write a blog. Would it be what they needed to hear? Would the headline attract them?
You may not be clear to start with on who your person is and so that leads me to my next point…
2. Quality & Quantity
OK, so I am firmly of the ‘do more’ category of thinkers. Lots of people spend a lot of time, trying to figure out the most streamlined way to do things and I just get on and do a lot of stuff and see what sticks. I generally tend to get where I am going a lot faster than most other people as well.
Yes, maybe, there is a particular way fo doign things that will be more time efficient but the time it takes those ‘norms’ to discover and do it, I will be far, far, FAR ahead and have discovered the same thing while makeing a lot more sales along the way.
Not everyone can keep to my weird ways of doing things and frankly, it took me a long time to allow myself to just be who I was and keep doing and doing, instead of trying to work out all the nitty-gritties that the strategists would have me do. IN time, the strategy gets more obvious and also, you start to see what people react to and what they don’t. The ‘over thinkers’ never get that knowledge. They only act when they think they know and unfortunately, you will still fail as many times as I do but I fail considerably faster.
Let me encourage you for to go for both quality AND quantity.
3. Build A Community
To get people coming back time and time again, keep your content updated but also, build a community of people who seem to own the message. How can you do this? How can you find these people?
By going beyond your own audience to tap into the audiences of other people. How can you do this? And this is soemthing I did not do for the longest time –
- Post on other people’s blogs
- Join in the comments on other people’s blogs that seem to get a lot of comments. Of course, this must be a blog that serves your audience.
- Build your own Facebook Page and invite people to like your page by using Facebook groups to reach new people, connecting with other Facebook page owners, and advertising your page by using great target-ing. Find out more about this over at RosemaryNonnyKnight.com/lets-dig-deep-into-facebook
4. Promote, promote, promote
I have already touched on this in the last point but, honey, this is the most important piece. You can write and write and write on your blog but if no one knows that you are there writing your little heart away, then NO ONE will find you. Brainstorm new ways to get your message out time and time again.
Use social media, use article directories, tell everyone, everywhere about what your blog is about and any new content you put out there. Find forums in your niche area and go be seen and when appropriate, suggest a post or two of yours. Make sure that you are answering questions your people are asking and you will start to see more people coming from the search engines. Please do not get caught up in writing for the search engines – write for people ALWAYS and the searh engines will send you traffic.
