How To Be An Engaging Speaker Either Online or Offline

Speaking is such a great way to get in front of your people whether you do it online or offline. Online talks can be webinars, masterclasses or just a teleclass whereas you can be booked into a physical event as a speaker to your local networking group, or anywhere where your ideal customers can be found.

There is something powerful about standing in front of a group – You are perceived as an expert just by choosing to stand up and be counted. Do not underestimate the power of this when creating new customers, clients and distributors.

Here are a few tips to support you in being the best speaker that you can be.

1. First of all, believe in yourself

This is where a lot of entrepreneurs fail – in the mind. If you cannot convince yourself that you have something of value to share then it becomes tough to convince anyone else of this. And more to the point, you may keep making excuses and not actually do the work of getting in front of a crowd and sharing with them what you know.

As long as you have been in business for more than a day and you have done some research around your product and what it can do for people then you have enough to use as a starting point for your talk. You just have to believe enough in yourself to book something in and make a start.

2.Turn up to the event a little early and mingle

Take the time to get to know the people you will be talking to. You can do this for both online or offline talks by showing up early enough to converse with the people who will be in the audience. The other side of this is that you get the audience on your side just by making them feel friendly towards you.

Another thing to consider is that you get to know the people and their desires, wants and needs and this can help you with tailoring your talk to the audience which again makes your audience feel cared for.

3. Be Natural

Do your best to be yourself when talking to people. You only want to attract people who feel aligned with you and when you try to be someone other than yourself, you end up attracting the wrong people into your world. And that makes business a bit tough if you are surrounded by customers who you do not like and customers who feel deceived when they realize what you are really like.

So, be yourself and this gets better with practice. You may find that doing online webinars is a great way to start and practice your talk because you find that not staring people in the eye makes it a lot easier for you to be you.

4. The Practicalities

How long do you have for your talk? And what then do you have time to share in that time? You cannot expect to share everything you know in an hour so don’t try to. Be very generous with your information because as mentioned, you will not be able to share everything anyway so don’t be concerned about giving away too much.

The other thing to consider is that even if you did share everything you know, you would probably just confuse and irritate everyone so take regular breaks and check in with the people listening to you to make sure that they are following you and keeping up with what you are sharing.

5. Change your voice tone

Sometimes, in a talk, I get pretty excited about what I am sharing and so, I talk really quickly and I have to consciously vary the tone of my voice so that it keeps people’s attention. You must do this too. Sometimes, talk slowly, steadily. Other times, speak with gusto and enthusiasm. Be conscious of this so that you do not go through the whole talk in one voice tone.
