You know that I am going to say ‘yes’, right? Of course, there are a few caveats…
But before we get to that, let’s talk about why people try to be anyone other than who they really truly are.
Because I have spoken to a lot of entrepreneurs who wonder how much of themselves they are allowed to show in public.
As though there is some type of ‘permission’ police out there, ready to rap you on the wrist for being too ‘you’ today!
Of course, there is not but there is that person in your head, right? And that voice wants you to pretend to have it altogether all the time. That voice wants you to put on your best show, all the time. And that voice probably also wants you to distance yourself from your audience because you do not want to appear too common and that unfortunately puts people off you which is exactly what you were trying to avoid.
No, I am not saying that you must wear your heart on your sleeve all the time because you are trying to be the ‘REAL YOU’ and ‘be me’ – No, remember you are still leader here!
However, you can be ‘you’ on the good and the bad days and still show up well.
A few tips…
1.Decide what areas of your life are off-limits
Pre-determine this. Decide how much of your life can become public so that you know, and you can tell people, where the boundaries are.
2. Link what you reveal to what your people want
Let there be purpose behind what you do. Be that lady or dude you see in the movies who has spent 24 hours in make up and now looks like they have no make up on. Your preparation does not need to show but try as much as possible to know your person so well that you can always link back whatever story you are telling to what they want.
Yes, people are weirdly interested in a voyeuristic way in other people’s lives but you want to be more than yesterday’s gossip so figure out how to link it back to the next step you want people to take.
3. Don’t be afraid to share your sad story
You might feel that you have to wait until you have experienced VAST success before you share where you came from but the truth is, you need people to get you to VAST success. So, why not share your story of where you have come from and what you are on the journey towards. This helps your people to feel more connected to you. They see that you are not perfect. They see that if you, this normal person, can do it then so can they. They like you because you are like them and they trust you enough to buy from you. They admire your courage in being real.
It is a win-win for you and you also get to impact people while you walk towards VAST success, whatever that means to you. Of course, link your sad story to their need as stated in the last point.
